BAN ON SINGLE USE PLASTIC BAGS IN QUEENSLAND TO COME INTO EFFECT ON 1ST JULY 2018

The Queensland Government has passed the Waste Reduction and Recycling Amendment Bill 2017 which will forbid retailers from providing or selling lightweight plastic bags (known as single-use singlet bags) from 1 July 2018.

To ensure consistency for the retail sector, Queensland will adopt a similar law to South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. However, unlike other jurisdictions, biodegradable bags are included in the ban in Queensland, as these bags still pose a risk to aquatic animals, a critical part of Queensland’s marine ecosystem and tourism industry.

The ban will apply to the following bags:
Lightweight plastic bags, less than 35 microns thick, with handles (‘singlet’ bags) including those deemed biodegradable, degradable or compostable.

HOW THIS WILL IMPACT ON EXHIBITORS AT QUEENSLAND GARDEN EXPO

As Queensland Garden Expo is held shortly after this ban is introduced NO single use plastic bags will be allowed to be used by exhibitors at the event.

SEE BELOW TO BE PART OF OUR BULK ORDER OF REUSABLE BAGS

We are sure that over the coming months and in the lead up to the ban that larger retailers and the State Government will be promoting the use of reusable bags and the need to take those with you when you are shopping.

We will also be promoting this to our visitors through newsletters and Facebook in the lead up to the event.

We would, however anticipate that there will be a considerable number of visitors who will either not have them, or not have enough, to cover the purchases that they would like to make.

We are conscious of the fact that many of our exhibitors are either small businesses or ones who are not regularly engaged in retail selling and the costs of smaller quantities of reusable bags is quite prohibitive.

We have therefore decided, as a service to our exhibitors, to place a bulk order for reusable bags and exhibitors can then take advantage of the reduced price that can be obtained from ordering larger quantities.

Queensland Garden Expo exhibitors will be able to order the bags with us for our cost price. This is $1/bag inc GST, (to order individually in lots of less than 500 the price would be close to $3). The bags would be available for collection during the setup of the event.

We have chosen a bag that is similar to the supermarket green bags that have reinforced handles and a plastic insert base. We have also opted for a design that is “unbranded” but with a tie to gardening in the design motif that is suitable for use by exhibitors at other events and retail outlets.

How you recover the cost of the bags is up to individual exhibitors. You may choose to include the bag in a sale, or offer a free bag for sales over a certain amount, or alternatively charge a fee for the bag.

HOW TO BE PART OF OUR BULK ORDER

Bags can be ordered in multiples of 50 with 50 being the minimum order. Orders and full payment must be received no later than 18th April 2018.

Bags will be available for collection at Nambour Showgrounds during the week preceding the Expo, 9-12 July 2018.
